A family in Kent recently got in touch because their 9-month-old was waking between 5:00am and 5:30am every morning. Bedtime was becoming a struggle, naps were unpredictable and the lack of sleep was leaving everyone tired.
As a baby sleep consultant in Kent, I started by looking at what was happening across the whole day and night. The family kept a week of sleep logs, which gave me a much clearer picture of their baby’s routine and sleep patterns.
It soon became clear that the problem wasn’t simply that their baby was waking too early. The balance of sleep across the day wasn’t quite right, so there wasn’t enough sleep pressure building up before bedtime to support a longer night.
When we first started working together, the family was dealing with:
Those 5am starts were particularly hard. Even if the evening had gone well, the parents knew they could be up again a few hours later.
I don’t use the same sleep plan for every family. What works well for one baby may not be right for another.
After looking through the sleep diary and talking through the family’s routine, I could see where some changes would help. The focus was on getting the right balance between daytime sleep, bedtime and sleep pressure rather than simply trying to make the baby sleep later.

I put together a sleep plan based on this baby’s age, routine and individual sleep needs. The plan included:
We made the changes gradually rather than trying to change everything at once. This also meant I could support the parents if something wasn’t working as expected.
Within two weeks, there was a clear improvement. The baby’s usual 5:00–5:30am wake-up moved to around 6:30am, which made a big difference to the family’s mornings.
Bedtime became calmer and more predictable, night wakings reduced and the baby was becoming more comfortable settling independently.
The parents also felt much more confident about what they were doing. Most importantly, they were getting more sleep themselves.

Why is my baby waking at 5am?
There can be a number of reasons for early morning waking. Daytime naps, bedtime, sleep pressure and your baby’s individual sleep needs can all have an effect. Looking at the full sleep pattern can help work out what may be causing those early starts.
How can I help my baby sleep later?
There isn’t one approach that works for every baby. Depending on their age and existing routine, changes to daytime sleep, bedtime or the morning routine may help. It’s important to look at the whole routine before making changes.
Can a sleep consultant help with early morning waking?
Yes. A sleep consultant can look at your baby’s sleep patterns and help identify areas that may be contributing to early waking. From there, a personalised plan can be put together around your child and your family.
