Keep reading for a comprehensive guide to baby sleeping bags, Togs, and everything you need to know to ensure your baby sleeps soundly and safely.

Do I Need a Baby Sleeping Bag?
Why are there specific sleeping bags for babies? Unlike adults, babies can’t use blankets or pillows in their cots due to safety risks. Babies are unable to roll themselves over reliably, which means they need a safe sleep environment that minimises risks. Baby sleeping bags allow for movement without the dangers of loose covers, providing warmth and safety. These bags come in various thicknesses and warmth levels, known as Togs, making it easier to regulate your baby’s temperature.

What is a Tog?
TOG stands for Thermal Overall Grade, a unit of measurement that indicates how warm or thick your baby’s sleeping bag is. The Tog rating refers to the insulation level of the sleeping bag:

• Togs range from 0.5 to 3.5, with some even lower for very hot weather.
• The lower the Tog, the thinner and cooler the sleeping bag. The higher the number, the thicker the material, making it ideal for keeping your baby nice and warm during colder weather.

Which Tog is Right for My Baby?
Choosing the right Tog is essential for maintaining your baby’s comfort, safety, and sleep quality. The appropriate Tog depends on several factors, including:
• Weather: Take into account the outdoor temperature.
• Season: Different seasons require different levels of warmth.
• House/Room Temperature: The ideal room temperature is between 16-20°C (60-68°F).
• Air Conditioning: If you use AC, it may alter the Tog your baby needs.
• Sleepwear: Layering with sleepsuits and babygrows can affect the Tog you choose.

Many parents tend to have a few different sleeping bags to cover various conditions. If you’re looking to buy just one, a Tog rating of 1.2-1.5 is a good year-round option, especially when paired with appropriate layering.

What Tog for What Temperature?
Here’s a quick guide to choosing the right Tog for different room temperatures:

• 25°C+ = 0.5 Tog
• 22-25°C = 1.5 Tog
• 17-21°C = 2.5 Tog
• 15-16°C = 2.5 Tog + babygrow
• 14°C or less = 3.5 Tog + babygrow + sleepsuit

How to Identify if Your Baby’s Sleeping Bag is Too Warm or Too Cold
It’s important to remember that babies’ bodies are still developing, and they may have a harder time adjusting to temperature changes, making it crucial to ensure your baby has the correct sleeping bag for their room.

Signs that the Tog might be wrong include your baby feeling warm to the touch, flushed cheeks, a sweaty neck, damp hair, or rapid breathing. If you notice any of these signs, your baby might be feeling too warm. Alternatively, if they’re too cold, they might be shivering, have cold hands and feet, or wake frequently due to discomfort. It’s best to check their temperature and adjust their clothing or sleeping bag accordingly.
